In1962theChevyIINovahadasemi-unibodyconstruction,withabolt-onfrontsectionconnectedtoaunitizedcabinandreartrunk.Ithada110-inchwheelbaseandwasconsideredabasiccompactcarforChevycustomers.ItwasdescribedbythenChevroletGMEdColeas“maximumfunctionalismwiththrift.”
Availableasa4-doorsedanand2-doorcoupe,itwasalsoavailableasaconvertibleandstationwagon.Therewerefivedifferentstylesandthreeseries;the100Series,300SeriesandNova400Series,withthe400Seriesconvertiblebeingthemostsportyandpopular.The200Serieswasquicklyintroducedanddiscontinued.
Insidefor1962and1963wastheChevroletinline4-engine153cuandaChevroletstraight-6194cuengine.Theyallhadoverheadvalves,buttheV8enginewasn’tavailableineitheryear.
Forappearance,the’62-63convertiblebodywasavailableandthe2-dorohardtopavailablefor1962-1965,anditwascalledtheSportCoupe.
TheChevyIINovaSuperSport(SS)wasproducedin1963forthe400SeriesSportsCoupeandconvertible,featuringnewinstrumentpackaging,emblems,wheelcovers,sidemoldings,floorshifterandnewbucketseats.ThiswouldbetheonlyeartheconvertibleSSwouldbeoffered.ThestandardSSenginewasa6-cylinder,astheV8wasn’tavailable.Itwasn’tuntil1964thattheV8wasavailable.ThisfactoryV8optionswerea283cu4-6-literwith195horsepower,alongwith230cu3.8-literstraightsix,athirdgenerationengine.
1965broughtannewlookfortheChevroletChevyIINovaandanextrapowerboostwithanewengine.Awidegrille,newintegratedheadlightbezelsbothgivingthecaragreatfrontendlook.Theparkinglightswereloweredonthebumper,andboththetaillightandthebackuplightsweregivenanewlook.The1965ChevyIIwasnowavailableinthe100andtheNova400.Duringthisyearonly9100NovaSuperSportSportCoupeswereproduced.TheSuperSport,however,hadanewfloor-mounted4-speedmanualtransmissionorPowerglideautomaticandabrushed-chromeconsole.Standardwasstillthecolumn-mounted3-speedmanual.Theinteriorwasgivenafaceliftaswell,withnewtexturedvinyltrim,temperaturegauge,oilpressuregaugeandammeter.
Newengineoptionsforthe1965ChevyIINovaincludedthe6-cylinderorV8engines.Therewasa4-cylinder,butitwasonlyavailablefortheChevyII100.The327cu5.4-literV8hadupto300horsepower,andlaterthatyeara283withdualexhaustsand220horsepowerwasavailable.SomesaythatthiswastheyearthattheChevyIIenteredthemusclecarera,asitcouldnowholditsownagainsttheMustangsandtheGTO.
Whilesalessufferedin1965,thenew1966ChevyIIhadanewlookandanewoutlook.Anewgrille,humpedfenders,andasemi-fastbackrooflineandtaperedtrunk.TheChevyII100andtheChevyIINova400wereback.The1966NovaSuperSportwasavailableonlyinasportcoupeandhadasastandardenginethe194cu3.18-literinline-6.Otherthanthe4-cylinder,however,anyChevyIIenginecouldbeusedontheSuperSport.TheNovaSuperSport(orNovaSS)hadwiderrockerpanelsandanaluminumdecklidcove,alongwithbrightSSemblemsonthegrilleandrearpanel.Strato-bucketfrontseatsgavethe1966NovaSSextracomfortandstyle.It’simportanttonotethatthenameorwordNOVAdoesn’tappearanywhereonthebodyoftheChevroletChevyIINovaSuperSport.EmblemsonthefrontandthebacksimplyhadChevyIISS.Itwasn’tuntil1967thattheNovaSSoptionpackagereplacedtheChevyIIbadgesonthevehiclewiththeNovaSSbadges.
The1966ChevyII100hadthestandard153cu2.51-liter90horsepowerinline-4engine,butupgradeswereavailablefororder,suchasthe194cu3.18-lieterinline-6,the230cu3.8-literwith195horsepower,the283cu4.64-literV8with220horsepower,the327cu5.36-literV8with275horsepower.Thebest,however,wasthenew327cuTurbo-Fire5.36-literwith350horsepower.
In1967otherthananewcrosshatchpatternfillingthedecklidtrimpanel,notalotchangedfortheNovadesign.The1967ChevyNovaSShadanewgrilleandnewSSwheelcovers,whichactuallycamefromthe1965ImpalaSS.TheNovaSScoupescamewithaconsole-mountedshiftleverandPowerglideautomatictransmissionoranoptional4-speedmanual.Alongwiththestandard194cu3.18-literinline-6enginewasanew250cu4.1-literinline-6.Finally,thenewNovaSSbadgesfinallyreplacedtheChevyIISSbadges.
