TheChevyNovawasthetopmodelintheChevyIIlineupthroughto1969.

In1962theChevyIINovahadasemi-unibodyconstruction,withabolt-onfrontsectionconnectedtoaunitizedcabinandreartrunk.Ithada110-inchwheelbaseandwasconsideredabasiccompactcarforChevycustomers.ItwasdescribedbythenChevroletGMEdColeas“maximumfunctionalismwiththrift.”

Availableasa4-doorsedanand2-doorcoupe,itwasalsoavailableasaconvertibleandstationwagon.Therewerefivedifferentstylesandthreeseries;the100Series,300SeriesandNova400Series,withthe400Seriesconvertiblebeingthemostsportyandpopular.The200Serieswasquicklyintroducedanddiscontinued.

Insidefor1962and1963wastheChevroletinline4-engine153cuandaChevroletstraight-6194cuengine.Theyallhadoverheadvalves,buttheV8enginewasn’tavailableineitheryear.

Forappearance,the’62-63convertiblebodywasavailableandthe2-dorohardtopavailablefor1962-1965,anditwascalledtheSportCoupe.

TheChevyIINovaSuperSport(SS)wasproducedin1963forthe400SeriesSportsCoupeandconvertible,featuringnewinstrumentpackaging,emblems,wheelcovers,sidemoldings,floorshifterandnewbucketseats.ThiswouldbetheonlyeartheconvertibleSSwouldbeoffered.ThestandardSSenginewasa6-cylinder,astheV8wasn’tavailable.Itwasn’tuntil1964thattheV8wasavailable.ThisfactoryV8optionswerea283cu4-6-literwith195horsepower,alongwith230cu3.8-literstraightsix,athirdgenerationengine.

1965broughtannewlookfortheChevroletChevyIINovaandanextrapowerboostwithanewengine.Awidegrille,newintegratedheadlightbezelsbothgivingthecaragreatfrontendlook.Theparkinglightswereloweredonthebumper,andboththetaillightandthebackuplightsweregivenanewlook.The1965ChevyIIwasnowavailableinthe100andtheNova400.Duringthisyearonly9100NovaSuperSportSportCoupeswereproduced.TheSuperSport,however,hadanewfloor-mounted4-speedmanualtransmissionorPowerglideautomaticandabrushed-chromeconsole.Standardwasstillthecolumn-mounted3-speedmanual.Theinteriorwasgivenafaceliftaswell,withnewtexturedvinyltrim,temperaturegauge,oilpressuregaugeandammeter.

Newengineoptionsforthe1965ChevyIINovaincludedthe6-cylinderorV8engines.Therewasa4-cylinder,butitwasonlyavailablefortheChevyII100.The327cu5.4-literV8hadupto300horsepower,andlaterthatyeara283withdualexhaustsand220horsepowerwasavailable.SomesaythatthiswastheyearthattheChevyIIenteredthemusclecarera,asitcouldnowholditsownagainsttheMustangsandtheGTO.

Whilesalessufferedin1965,thenew1966ChevyIIhadanewlookandanewoutlook.Anewgrille,humpedfenders,andasemi-fastbackrooflineandtaperedtrunk.TheChevyII100andtheChevyIINova400wereback.The1966NovaSuperSportwasavailableonlyinasportcoupeandhadasastandardenginethe194cu3.18-literinline-6.Otherthanthe4-cylinder,however,anyChevyIIenginecouldbeusedontheSuperSport.TheNovaSuperSport(orNovaSS)hadwiderrockerpanelsandanaluminumdecklidcove,alongwithbrightSSemblemsonthegrilleandrearpanel.Strato-bucketfrontseatsgavethe1966NovaSSextracomfortandstyle.It’simportanttonotethatthenameorwordNOVAdoesn’tappearanywhereonthebodyoftheChevroletChevyIINovaSuperSport.EmblemsonthefrontandthebacksimplyhadChevyIISS.Itwasn’tuntil1967thattheNovaSSoptionpackagereplacedtheChevyIIbadgesonthevehiclewiththeNovaSSbadges.

The1966ChevyII100hadthestandard153cu2.51-liter90horsepowerinline-4engine,butupgradeswereavailablefororder,suchasthe194cu3.18-lieterinline-6,the230cu3.8-literwith195horsepower,the283cu4.64-literV8with220horsepower,the327cu5.36-literV8with275horsepower.Thebest,however,wasthenew327cuTurbo-Fire5.36-literwith350horsepower.

In1967otherthananewcrosshatchpatternfillingthedecklidtrimpanel,notalotchangedfortheNovadesign.The1967ChevyNovaSShadanewgrilleandnewSSwheelcovers,whichactuallycamefromthe1965ImpalaSS.TheNovaSScoupescamewithaconsole-mountedshiftleverandPowerglideautomatictransmissionoranoptional4-speedmanual.Alongwiththestandard194cu3.18-literinline-6enginewasanew250cu4.1-literinline-6.Finally,thenewNovaSSbadgesfinallyreplacedtheChevyIISSbadges.

1968-1974NovaHistory1968wasthelastyearfortheChevyIIname

TheNovaSS,nowaperformancepackageinsteadofatrimoption,wasboostedupfromthe350V8with295horsepowertoaroaring396with375horsepower,heavy-dutysuspensionandoptionalfrontdiscbrakes.During1969only1000NovashadtheBigBlockengineoutofthemorethan17,000NovaSSsproduced.From1968to1970a153cu2.51-liter4-cylinderenginewasavailablebuteventuallywasdiscontinuedduetolackofsales.InsteadChevroletNovaownersoptedforthe250cu4.1-lieter6-cylinderandthenewbase307cu5.03-literV8.Laterin1969asemi-automatictransmission,theTorque-Drive(RPOMB1)offeredaclutchlessmotoringlow-costoptionforthe4-cylinderand6-cylinderengines.

In1969theChevyIIprefixwasdroppedandwewereintroducedtotheChevroletNova.AlongerwheelbaseandnewenginesmovedtheNovafromthatoriginalfunctionalcartoatruemusclecarstillafavoriteamongcollectorsandclassiccarfans.1969wastheyearlockingsteeringcolumnswereinstalledintheChevyNova.The350cu5.7-literV8with4-barrelcarburetorintheSSoptionwasnowkickingout300horsepower.AnewoptionforChevyNovaswasa2-barrelcarbureted350cu5.7-literV8with255horsepower.ChevyNovaswith6-cylinderandV8enginescouldalsooptfortheTurbo-Hydramatic3503-speedautomatic.

Therewerenotalotofchangesforthe1970ChevyNovaotherthanwidersidemarkerandtaillightlenses.Infact,otherthanthesechangesitisreallyhardtotellthe1969andthe1970apart.Enginesfromthepreviousyearweresimplycarriedover.DuringthisyearwesawthenameChevroletNovainreferencetothecar.IttooktimetoslowlychangethebrandingfromtheChevyIINovain1968totheChevroletChevyNovain1969tothe1970ChevroletNova.

TheNova,onceagain,didn’tgothroughanyremarkabledesignchangesfor1971.InsidetheSS,anew350cu5.7-literreplacedthe396cu6.49-literengine.TheRallyNovatrimlevelwasintroduced,offeringblackorwhitestripes,RallyNovadecalonthedriver’ssideofthehood,Rallywheels,multi-leafrearspringsandanewcoloreddriver’ssidemirrorwithinterioradjustment.AllNovashadthestandard250cu4.1-liter6-cylinderengine,andfeaturedlowercompressionratios.Only7,015SuperSportNovasweremadein1971.

The1972Novahadafewnewtrimchangesbutwasstillpopular.MoreNovaSSswereproducedin1972thanin1971.ItcamewiththeL48small-blockandasingle4-barrelcarburetorwithatotalof200horsepower.ASkyroof,knownastheVenturaIIFoldingSunroof,whichwasaslidingfabricsunroofofsortswasavailablein1972.

Anewhatchbackwasintroducedin1973,alongwithanewfrontandrearredesign.Bumpersatthetimeweremandatedtobecapableofabsorbinga2.5mphimpact,sotheNovareceivedanewgrilledesignandtheparkinglightswerenowlocatedinboardwiththeheadlights.ThenewNovaCustomwasthebestavailableandtheSSoptionwasdowngradedtoapackagethatincludedRallywheelsandablackoutgrille.Affordableatonlyaround$123.00US,morethan35,542packageswereinstalled.Alsonewfor1973weretheeliminationofventwindowsandtheintroductionofanewmodifiedrearwindowdesign,sideguarddoorbeamsandmoresoundinsulation.Otheroptionsincludedfold-downrearseats,sunroof,andairconditioning.

The1974ChevroletNovanowhadbiggerparkinglights,blackpaintedwindowframesandsportmirrors,bow-tiegrilleemblems,newbumpersandaweight-sensitiverelayinthefrontseatthatpreventedthecarfromstartingwithouttheseatbeltbeingdoneup,asmandatedbytheNHTSA.Eventuallythismandatewouldberepealed.ThePowerglideinthevehiclewasnowreplacedbya3-speedTurbo-Hydramatic350.1974wasagreatsalesyear,witharound400,000Novasproducedthatyear.

1975-1979NovaHistoryTheLuxuryNova(akatheNovaLN)wasintroducedin1975

1975wasayearofchangesandthe1975ChevroletNovawentthroughsomeseriousdesignchangesforthisyear.Whilethewheelbasewasstill111-inches,thefronttreadwasextendedbyoveraninchandthefrontstabilizerbarwaslarger.StandardforthisyearinallNovasweresteel-beltedradialsandfrontdiscbrakes.Insidecut-pilecarpetinggavetheinterioramoreluxuriousappealandlargergraphicsonthespeedometers,alargerwindshield,andfront-doorarmrestswithintegralpullbarsmadethisridemorecomfortablethanever.Thebasemodelof1975ChevroletNovahada2504.1-liter6-cylinderenginewith105horsepower.A262cu4.29-literV8wasalsoofferedin1975only.

TheLuxuryNova(akatheNovaLN)wasintroducedin1975tohelpNovaentertheluxurycompactcarmarket.Ithadplushwide-backrecliningfrontseats,mappockets,smokedinstrumentlenses,day/nightmirror,andextrasoundinsulationand,forthecoupe,swing-outquarterwindows.

TheNovaLNwouldberebrandedastheConcoursin1976.Threebodystyleswerenowavailable;hatchbackcoupe,4-doorsedanandcoupe.Theinteriorwasincredible.Rosewoodvinylontheupperdoorpanels,steeringwheelandinstrumentpanel,uprighthoodornament,bumperguards,blackbumperimpactstrips,fold-downcenterarmrest(forthecoupe),fullwheelcoversandnewbrighttrimmoldings.

The1976ChevroletNovaenginesincludedtheinline-6with105horsepower,the350cuV8with165horsepower,andthe305cuV8with140horsepower.TheNovaSSoptionoffered4-spokesteeringwheel,Rallywheels,heavy-dutysuspensionandadiamond-meshpatternedblackgrille.

In1977,whilethebodychangeswereminor,newcolorswereavailable.Inside,newgaugesandanupdatedflatterdashpanelwereinstalled.TheNovaSSwasdiscontinued,thoughtheoptioncodeRPOZ26wouldbecontinuedonfrom1977to1979astheNovaRally.Therewerefourtransmissionsandthreeenginesavailablein1977,aswellas3-speedand4-speedmanualonthecolumnorfloor,orbyTurboHydra-Matic.

The1977Councoursreceivedanewhoodornamentandfrontgrille,andnewtripleunittaillights,alongwithnewwheelcovers.TheConcourswouldbediscontinuedin1978,leavingtheNovaCustomtotakeonsomeoftheConcoursexterioraffects.The1978ChevroletNovanowhadanewgold-coloredChevybowtieemblematthehoodandinsidetheupholsterychoiceswereEdinburgwovensportcloth-and-vinylorall-vinyl.Alsonewfor1978wastheadditionofacomfortablevinyl-covereddual-spokesteeringwheel.

In1979newsquareheadlightsandanewgrillewouldbeintroduced,alongwithnewchromefenderandhoodmoldings,andnewfront-bumperfillerpanels.TheRallypackagewasavailable,aswastheNovaCustomsspecialacousticalpackage.Thisyearwouldbetheendoftherear-wheel-driveNova.
