The spring was originally installed in the hose to speed up the coolant fill operation during final assembly at the factory. The spring holds the lower hose open for the quick pressure fill of coolant. Once the El Camino is off the assembly line the spring has served its purpose. A properly operating El Camino cooling system no longer requires the spring after the assembly process. The normal state of a cooling system is a pressure condition; around 14 to 18psi
