The spring holds the lower hose open for the quick pressure fill of coolant. Once the El Camino is off the assembly line the spring has served its purpose. A properly operating El Camino cooling system no longer requires the spring after the assembly process. The normal state of a cooling system is a pressure condition; around 14 to 18psi
